5 Packing Tips for the Reluctant Mover

While a move can be the biggest adventure in your life, it’s not something that people look forward to doing. If you are forced to move because of a new job or downsized lifestyle, packing may be the farthest thing in your mind right now. You might even be trying to delay the move by not packing your things. But alas, no matter how much you try to deny the fact that you have to move, the clock is ticking, and the departure day is coming fast.

The most practical way to start moving is to first research the best interstate movers near you. You need to partner with an accredited and licensed mover that operates in your destination. Start talking with a few moving companies and see which one best suits your needs.

Declutter

Moving is the best time to declutter. This is when you should divide your things into four piles: sell, throw, donate, and keep. Once you have figured out what items to bring during the move, you can decide what to do with the rest.

You can hold a garage sale, the proceeds of which could pay the mover’s fees. You can also donate the items to a shelter, or you can simply throw away items that are no longer of use. It’s always advisable to reuse or donate items so you won’t contribute to filling up a landfill.

Ask the Movers for Boxes

Most movers can provide storage boxes for you. They will have different sizes and storage capacities depending on what you will move. Instead of going to a home improvement store to buy moving boxes, ask the movers what storage containers they can provide. If they cannot provide the boxes themselves, they can give you a list of specifications for what kinds will fit their trucks most efficiently.

Pack Rarely Used Items

If you are dilly-dallying on packing, one way to get out of the rut is to start packing out-of-season and rarely used items. If it’s summer, pack your ski coats and wool sweaters first. Do you need that bread maker? Probably not when you’re in the middle of the move. That should go in a box early on, too.

Do a Little Bit Each Day

Spend one hour each day packing. Every weekend, give up your Saturdays to pack more things. Do this a month or two before the move. That one hour a day will replace the time you would’ve otherwise spent packing at the last minute in a panic. Breaking down your goals into smaller, more achievable  milestones will make the process easier. Do not procrastinate because that will only lead to stress.

Label Boxes Correctly

You are not just packing to move. Your goal in packing should be to make it more convenient to unpack later on. Label each box as you close it, making sure to list down all the items inside the box. While it takes a lot of time, this is also a practical thing to do so you will have an easier time unpacking in your new home.

The Takeaway

In our highly digitized world, remember that there are apps and digital tools that can make the process stress- and hassle-free. Overall, if you prepare well and navigate the packing process with care, you can help yourself have an easier move and unpacking experience.
